Irving Layton

Irving Peter Layton (født som Israel Pincu Lazarovitch 12. mars 1912 i Târgu Neamț i dagens Romania, død 4. januar 2006 i Montreal, Canada) var en kanadisk dikter kjent for en direkte og eksplisitt stil. Han ga ut 50 diktsamlinger.[6]

Han innvandret til Canada med sine jødiske foreldre Moses og Klara Lazarovitch i 1913. Han vokste opp i trange kår i en fattig del av Montreal.[7] Layton regnet seg ikke som religiøs jøde. Han var politisk radikal og involvert i en sosialistbevegelse, han ble på grunn av dette nektet innreise til USA i 15 år.[8] Han var en periode redaktør for litteraturtidsskriftet Northern Review. I 1946 fullførte han en mastergrad i økonomi og statsvitenskap ved McGill universitet. Han avbrøt arbeidet med doktorgrad. I 1976 ble han æresdoktor ved Concordia University.[9] Han underviste selv ved McGill[6] og York University.[10]

Irving Layton (1969)[11]

Han var gift fem ganger.[7] I sitt andre ekteskap var han gift med Betty Sutherland, søster av Donald Sutherland. Hans siste kone var 50 år yngre[12] og han fikk barn siste gang da han var 70 år gammel.[8]

På 1950-tallet ble han gjennom sin dikting og sin politiske aktivisme en kjent figur i kanadisk offentlighet. Han var en fryktet debattant og kjent for sin dramatisk og flamboyante fremtoning, han var Canadas enfant terrible.[6][7][13] Layton ble nominert til Nobelprisen i litteratur i 1981.[14] Han ble nær venn av og læremester for den 20 år yngre forfatteren Leonard Cohen.[15] I 1986 ble det laget en times lang dokumentarfilm om Layton.[14] Han ble i 1976 tatt opp som "officer" i Order of Canada.[7] I 1959 ble han tildelt generalguvernørens pris.[16]
