Recent changes
- Twinkle is a gadget on English Wikipedia. It can help with maintenance and patrolling. It can now be used on other wikis. You can get Twinkle on your wiki using the twinkle-starter GitHub repository.
Problems
- The content translation tool did not work for many articles for a little while. This was because of a bug. [1]
- Some things will not work for about a minute on 5 May. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This will affect the content translation tool and notifications among other things. This is because of an upgrade to avoid crashes. [2]
Changes later this week
- Reference Previews will become a default feature on a number of wikis on 5 May. This is later than planned because of some changes. You can use it without using Page Previews if you want to. The earlier plan was to have the preference to use both or none. [3][4]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 May. It will be on all wikis from 6 May (calendar).
Future changes
The CSS classes .error,.warningand.successdo not work for mobile readers if they have not been specifically defined on your wiki. From June they will not work for desktop readers. This can affect gadgets and templates. The classes can be defined in MediaWiki:Common.css or template styles instead. [5]

Recent changes
- There is a new toolbar in the Reply tool. It works in the wikitext source mode. You can enable it in your preferences. [6] [7] [8]
- Wikimedia mailing lists are being moved to Mailman 3. This is a newer version. For the character encoding to work it will change from
UTF-8toutf8mb3. [9][10] - An earlier issue of Tech News said that the citoid API would handle dates with a month but no days in a new way. This has been reverted for now. There needs to be more discussion of how it affects different wikis first. [11]

MediaWiki:Pageimages-blacklistwill be renamedMediaWiki:Pageimages-denylist. The list can be copied to the new name. It will happen on 19 May for some wikis and 20 May for some wikis. Most wikis don't use it. It lists images that should never be used as thumbnails for articles. [12] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 May. It will be on all wikis from 20 May (calendar).

Welcome to the eighteenth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
Structured tasks

"Add a link" is now being tested in production and is nearing release on our four pilot wikis (Arabic, Czech, Vietnamese, and Bengali Wikipedias). We'll be doing final tests this week and next week, and then plan to deploy to the four wikis either during May 24 week, or May 31 week. After two weeks, we will analyze the initial data to identify any problems or trends. We expect that this feature will engage new kinds of newcomers in easy and successful edits. If things are going well after four weeks, we'll progressively deploy it to the wikis with Growth features.
News for mentors

- We are currently working on a Mentor dashboard. This special page aims to help mentors be more proactive and be more successful at their role. The first iteration will include a table that shows an overview of the mentors current mentees, a module with their own settings, and a module that will allow them to store their best replies to their mentees questions.
- We've conducted our quarterly audit on Growth's four pilot wikis to see the activity of mentors. It appears that the vast majority of mentors are active.
Community configuration

We are working on project to allow communities to manage the configuration of the Growth features on their own. In the past, communities have needed to work directly with the Growth team to set up and alter the features. We plan to put this capability in the hands of administrators, through an easy-to-use form, so that the features can be easily tailored to fit the needs of each community. While we developed it initially for Growth features, we think this approach could have uses in other features as well. We'll be trying this on our pilot wikis in the coming weeks, and then we'll bring it to all Growth wikis soon after. We hope you check out the project page and add any of your thoughts to the talk page.

- A new group of Wikipedias has been defined for the deployment of Growth features. Please contact us if you have questions about the deployment process, or if your community likes to get the features in advance.
- After discussion with the English Wikipedia community, the Growth features will be tested on a small percentage of new accounts. At the moment, registered users can test the features by turning them on in their preferences.

Wikitreff Litteraturhuset, 19. oktober, kl 17:00
redigerDet blir Wikitreff på Litteraturhuset i Oslo, tirsdag 19. oktober 2021, klokken 17:00, i salen Kverneland i andre etasje. Innledning av Ulf Larsen, tittel er følgende: «Et kritisk blikk på Wikipedia». Innledningen blir på om lag 45 minutter, deretter blir det en kort pause, hvorpå det er åpen for om lag én times diskusjon over innledningen, og eventuelle andre emner de fremmøtte ønsker å diskutere.
Det blir baguetter, kaffe og noe mineralvann, til de som har meldt seg på innen én uke før møtedato. Salen har plass til 40, og de påmeldte prioriteres hvis det er mange fremmøtte.

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia movement has been using IRC on a network called Freenode. There have been changes around who is in control of the network. The Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts have decided to move to the new Libera Chat network instead. This is not a formal decision for the movement to move all channels but most Wikimedia IRC channels will probably leave Freenode. There is a migration guide and ongoing Wikimedia discussions about this.

Hei, her kommer siste nytt fra Wikimedia Norge!
- Arctic Knot
- 24.–25. juni skjer det endelig. Språkkonferansen Arctic Knot er i gang. Konferansen er digital, og vi håper dere synes programmet er interessant! Det blir spennende paneldiskusjoner, og mulighet til å bli kjent med prosjekter som Abstract Wikipedia og Wikikilden.
- Programmet i sin helhet ligger nå ute på Meta-siden, og du kan også lese om konferansen på bloggen vår.
- Registreringen er åpen, og det er så klart helt gratis å melde seg på.
- Det vil være mulig å registrere seg fram til konferansen starter, men ønsker du å være med på workshoppen som heter Unlocking the potential of digital language archives er det viktig å registrere seg innen 20. juni for å få muligheten til å søke i arkivet Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) underveis.
- Ellers er det et variert og veldig spennende program, og vi tror alle vil finne noe interessant i dette programmet.

- Månedens konkurranse på Wikipedia
- Temaet for månedens konkurranse for juni er kunstnere. Redigeringer på artikler om alle kunstnere vil gi poeng i konkurransen, men vi håper så mange som mulig av dere vil bidra til å skrive om samiske, og andre urfolkskunstnere, på Wikipedia.
- Wikimania
- I år er Wikimania digitalt, noe som gjør det mulig for enda flere å bli med. Temaet er 20 år med Wikipedia, og altså en tid for å feire hva Wikimedia-bevegelsen har oppnådd, og se tilbake på reisen som har vært. Det er nå mulig å sende inn bidrag. Har du en idé til et bidrag, men usikker på vinkling så ta gjerne kontakt. Vi kan bistå med idémyldring og eventuelt andre praktikaliteter!
- Wikitreff
- Nå er det ikke lenge til det er mulig å organisere fysiske wikitreff igjen. Noen er allerede i gang med å planlegge! Det er veldig fint om flere får mulighet til å være med på wikitreff. Wikimedia Norge kan bistå med økonomisk støtte om du ønsker å organisere et der du bor!
- Vi kommer til å fortsette å organisere wikitreff, ulike workshoper og admintreff med (u)jevne mellomrom enten digitalt eller fysisk. Har du ønsker til tema, så kan du tipse Jon Harald (jhsoby@wikimedia.no)!
